Travel Trailer Weight by Length

US & Canada

Measured from 165 current models across 8 makers: a 20 ft travel trailer is about 3,492 lb empty, a 26 ft about 5,104 lb and a 30 ft about 6,396 lb. Loaded, plan on the GVWR instead. The full table is below the calculator.

Your travel trailer

1. From the spec sheet or the trailer's label

lb

The brochure figure, or better, the weight on the label inside your trailer.

lb

On the trailer's compliance label or the spec sheet. Leave 0 if unknown.

2. What you will carry

lb

Food, clothes, bedding, chairs, tools, hoses. People ride in the tow vehicle, so they count against its payload instead.

US gal

0 if you travel with an empty tank. Count the grey and black tanks too if you leave them full.

lb

Tank capacity, as printed on the spec sheet or tank collar. Enter 0 if your maker already counts LP in the empty weight.

lb

Batteries, solar, a generator, bikes on the bumper: anything fitted after the factory weighed it.

Empty weight leaves out most of what you take camping, and it often leaves out options the dealer fitted. That gap is usually several hundred pounds, which is why the label weight beats the brochure.

How the loaded weight adds up

How the loaded weight adds up

Water at 8.34 lb per US gallon (USGS). Tongue weight at 10 to 15% is manufacturer guidance for a ball hitch, not law.

Travel trailer weight by length

Each row is the range and the median of the current models we found at that length, read off each maker's own spec page on 2026-10-24. Measured from these 165 models, not a regulation and not an industry average: a different sample would give different numbers, so the model list under the table shows exactly what each row is made of.

Length is the maker's published exterior length, which KZ and Venture measure from the rear of the bumper to the front of the coupler. Empty weight is whatever the maker publishes as UVW, base weight or dry weight. Makers: Airstream, Casita, Escape, Forest River, Grand Design, KZ, Oliver, Venture RV. The 16, 18, 34 ft rows have fewer than 10 models each, so treat their medians as rough.

Across all 165 models the median is 5,420 lb (2,458 kg) empty and a GVWR of 6,995 lb (3,173 kg). Length explains most of the spread. Grouped by size, using our own grouping rather than any industry definition:

Median travel trailer weight by size group

Small
15 ft 0 in to 20 ft 11 in
28 3,100 lb (1,406 kg) 4,165 lb (1,889 kg)
Mid-size
21 ft 0 in to 28 ft 11 in
77 4,900 lb (2,223 kg) 6,395 lb (2,901 kg)
Large

60 6,940 lb (3,148 kg) 8,800 lb (3,992 kg)

Makers use words like lightweight and ultralight freely, so compare the numbers rather than the badge.

Dry weight, loaded weight and GVWR

  • Dry weight or UVW is the trailer as it left the factory. Makers define it differently: Forest River's UVW includes LP gas, KZ and Venture publish a rolling average for the model, and Casita and Escape publish a starting weight before options. It is the smallest number on the sheet and the least useful for towing.
  • Loaded weight is what the trailer actually weighs on the road: empty weight plus everything you put in it. Only a scale tells you this exactly.
  • GVWR is the most the trailer may weigh loaded. 49 CFR 571.3, Definitions defines it as "Gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle."
  • Cargo capacity (CCC) is GVWR minus empty weight. In this sample it runs 350 lb to 3,015 lb, median 1,470 lb.

The honest planning number is the GVWR, or the empty weight plus a realistic load of cargo, water, propane and batteries if you have worked that out. Never plan a tow on the dry weight: it leaves out everything you take camping.

Estimating your loaded weight

The calculator at the top of the page adds it up:

Loaded weight = empty weight + cargo + water + propane + added equipment

  • Water at 8.34 lb per US gallon. USGS Circular 1268, Conversion factors: "1 gallon (gal) = 8.34 pounds".
  • Propane in pounds, the unit trailer spec sheets use: KZ, Connect C271RL specifications lists the propane capacity in pounds. Enter 0 if your maker already counts LP in the empty weight, as Forest River does.
  • Added equipment: batteries, solar, a generator, anything on the bumper or roof.

The estimate is not capped at the GVWR. If it comes out above, the calculator says by how much, because that is an overloaded trailer whatever the tow vehicle is rated for.

Hitch weight: what lands on your truck

Chevrolet, 2026 Trailering Guide, p. 8 gives 10 to 15% of loaded trailer weight on the ball for a conventional hitch. That is manufacturer guidance, not law. At the median GVWR of a 24 ft trailer (6,395 lb) it is 640 lb to 959 lb; at a 30 ft trailer's median (7,773 lb), 777 lb to 1,166 lb.

All of it counts against the tow vehicle's payload, which is usually the limit you hit first. Work out your own band on the tongue weight calculator, then check the whole rig on Can I tow this?

Which lengths stay under 3,000, 3,500, 5,000, 6,000 or 7,000 lb?

Counted from the same 165 models. The GVWR columns are the ones to shop by, because that is what the trailer can weigh once it is loaded.

Whether your truck or SUV can pull one of these is a separate question, and payload usually decides it before the tow rating does. A half-ton pickup's limits vary by build, so put your own door sticker numbers into Can I tow this? or the payload calculator.

Jayco and Keystone are not in this sample yet: we could not read their spec pages reliably on 2026-10-24, and we would rather leave a brand out than type its numbers from somewhere else. For any brand, the trailer's own spec page or label is the source to trust. Escape is a Canadian builder, in Chilliwack, BC.

Teardrops and pop-up campers

Kept out of the length table because a pop-up's length is published closed, and teardrop makers do not all publish a GVWR.

What this page does not cover

  • Fifth wheels and gooseneck campers are heavier for their length and hitch differently, with far more weight on the truck. They get their own page.
  • Toy haulers carry a garage load and are not in this sample.
  • Motorhomes, camper vans and truck campers are not towed on a ball hitch, so they are a different weight question. See motorhome and truck camper weights.
  • Vintage trailers: there is no current spec page to read, so weigh it or read its label.
  • Boat, utility, car and enclosed cargo trailers belong on their own pages, because what they weigh depends on the load more than the length.

How to find your own trailer's weight

  1. Find the labels inside the trailer. Forest River, for example, says it weighs each unit and applies "a label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity" before it ships. That actual weight beats any brochure.
  2. Read the GVWR on the trailer's compliance label. On a Canadian trailer it is the same rating in kilograms, also marked PNBV. See GVWR and GCWR explained.
  3. Weigh it loaded, as you tow it, on a public scale. That is the only number that includes what you actually carry.

Sources

Manufacturer spec pages, each opened on 2026-10-24. Every row in the table comes from one of these.

All ranges, medians, counts and tongue weights on this page are calculated from the figures above. Makers revise specs during the model year; check the current spec sheet before you buy. KZ, Sportsmen Classic specifications and the other KZ and Venture sheets note that the weight "will vary according to optional equipment".

Common questions

How much does a 20 ft travel trailer weigh?
Across the 17 current models we found from 19 ft 0 in to 20 ft 11 in, empty weight runs 2,529 to 3,968 lb (1,147 to 1,800 kg), with a median of 3,492 lb (1,584 kg). GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 3,800 to 5,000 lb (1,724 to 2,268 kg), median 4,420 lb (2,005 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.

GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 5,600 to 7,850 lb (2,540 to 3,561 kg), median 6,995 lb (3,173 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.
How much does a 28 ft travel trailer weigh?
Across the 17 current models we found from 27 ft 0 in to 28 ft 11 in, empty weight runs 4,120 to 7,550 lb (1,869 to 3,425 kg), with a median of 5,790 lb (2,626 kg). GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 5,600 to 8,800 lb (2,540 to 3,992 kg), median 7,335 lb (3,327 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.
How much does a 30 ft travel trailer weigh?
Across the 12 current models we found from 29 ft 0 in to 30 ft 11 in, empty weight runs 5,320 to 6,689 lb (2,413 to 3,034 kg), with a median of 6,396 lb (2,901 kg). GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 6,995 to 8,300 lb (3,173 to 3,765 kg), median 7,773 lb (3,526 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.
How much does a 16 ft travel trailer weigh?
Across the 7 current models we found from 15 ft 0 in to 16 ft 11 in, empty weight runs 2,389 to 3,450 lb (1,084 to 1,565 kg), with a median of 2,640 lb (1,197 kg). GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 3,500 to 4,300 lb (1,588 to 1,950 kg), median 3,775 lb (1,712 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.
How much does a 32 ft travel trailer weigh?
Across the 27 current models we found from 31 ft 0 in to 32 ft 11 in, empty weight runs 6,300 to 7,850 lb (2,858 to 3,561 kg), with a median of 6,740 lb (3,057 kg). GVWR, the most the trailer may weigh loaded, runs 7,000 to 10,195 lb (3,175 to 4,624 kg), median 8,800 lb (3,992 kg). Plan the tow around the GVWR, not the empty figure.
What about a 21, 25, 27 or 29 ft trailer?
Each row of the table covers two feet, so an odd length sits in the row above it: a 25 ft trailer is in the 26 ft row (25 ft 0 in to 26 ft 11 in), a 27 ft trailer in the 28 ft row, a 29 ft trailer in the 30 ft row and a 21 ft trailer in the 22 ft row. Open the row's model list to see trailers at exactly your length.
How much does the average travel trailer weigh?
The median of all 165 models in this sample is 5,420 lb (2,458 kg) empty and 6,995 lb (3,173 kg) GVWR. That middle figure hides a wide spread, 2,260 to 9,518 lb (1,025 to 4,317 kg) empty, so the length of the trailer you are looking at tells you far more than any average.
How much does a camper weigh?
It depends on which kind of camper. A travel trailer, the kind pulled on a ball hitch, is what the table on this page covers. Pop-up and teardrop campers have their own short list further down. Fifth wheels, truck campers, camper vans and motorhomes are different vehicles with different numbers, and they are not in this sample. Truck campers and motorhomes have their own page: /motorhome-truck-camper-weights/.
How much does a camper weigh in kg?
Every figure on this page is given in pounds and kilograms. The median travel trailer in this sample is 2,458 kg empty with a GVWR of 3,173 kg. In Canada the trailer's compliance label gives the GVWR in kilograms as well.
How much does a fully loaded travel trailer weigh?
At most its GVWR. 49 CFR 571.3, Definitions defines GVWR as "Gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle." In this sample the gap between empty weight and GVWR, the cargo capacity, runs 350 lb to 3,015 lb, median 1,470 lb.
What does dry weight include?
It depends on the maker, which is the problem with it. Forest River says its UVW includes LP gas and excludes cargo, fresh water, optional equipment and dealer-installed accessories. KZ and Venture publish a rolling average for the model. Casita and Escape publish a starting weight before options. Read the definition on the spec sheet before you compare two trailers.
Dry weight vs GVWR: which one do I use?
GVWR. Dry weight is the trailer before you put anything in it. GVWR is the most it is allowed to weigh, and it is what your tow vehicle should be checked against unless you have weighed the loaded trailer yourself.
How much weight can a travel trailer hold?
Its GVWR minus its empty weight. Forest River puts it this way: "CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon)." Across this sample that capacity runs from 350 lb to 3,015 lb, median 1,470 lb, and water, propane and any added batteries come out of it before your gear does.
How much tongue weight does a camper have?
Chevrolet, 2026 Trailering Guide, p. 8 gives 10 to 15% of loaded trailer weight for a ball hitch. At the median 24 ft GVWR of 6,395 lb that is 640 lb to 959 lb. This is manufacturer guidance, not law, and it counts in full against your tow vehicle's payload.
Is the model number the length?
No. Trailer model numbers hint at length but often do not match it. In this sample a KZ Sportsmen 301BHK is 32 ft 10 in long. Use the exterior length on the spec sheet, which KZ and Venture measure from the rear bumper to the front of the coupler.
How much does a 17 ft Casita weigh?
Casita Travel Trailers, 17 ft Spirit lists a starting dry weight of 2,260 lb (1,025 kg) and a GVWR of 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) for the 17 ft Spirit. Casita's other 17 ft models publish the same two figures. "Starting" means before options, so a well-equipped one weighs more.
How do I find out what my camper weighs?
Read the labels inside it first: Forest River, for one, weighs every unit and labels its actual unloaded weight and cargo capacity before it leaves the plant. Then weigh it loaded on a public scale, because that is the only number that includes what you actually carry.
