Utility, Dump and Enclosed Trailer Weights

US & Canada

Measured from 163 current models: a 5x8 open utility trailer is about 767 lb empty, a 6x12 enclosed trailer about 1,780 lb and a 7x14 dump trailer about 4,180 lb. What matters loaded is the GVWR on the plate. Check your own load against it in the calculator.

Your trailer and its load

1. From the spec sheet or the trailer's label

lb

Empty, curb or dry weight on the maker's spec page, or the trailer weighed on a scale.

lb

On the trailer's VIN plate or certification label, front half of the left side. Leave 0 if unknown.

lb

Optional. Leave 0 and the calculator uses GVWR minus empty weight, which is how makers define it.

2. What goes on or in it

lb

Everything on the deck or in the box: the car, the mower, the gravel, the horses, the tack, tools and fuel.

Payload counts everything you add, including straps, ramps and a toolbox bolted on after the trailer left the factory.

Utility trailer weight chart

Open utility and landscape trailers, by size. Each row is the range and the median of the models we found at that size, read off each maker's spec page on 2026-10-24. Measured from this sample, not a regulation and not an industry average: the model lists further down show exactly what each row is made of.

Size is the maker's nominal width by deck length. Big Tex gives bed width in inches, so 60 in is listed as 5 ft, 77 in as 6 ft and 83 in as 7 ft, matching how Carry-On names its 76 in and 82 in decks. Where one size spans 2,995 lb and 7,000 lb GVWRs, the difference is one axle or two.

Enclosed cargo trailer weight by size

Enclosed trailers weigh more than open ones of the same size because the walls, roof and doors are part of the empty weight. Same method as above.

Haulmark names its V-nose trailers by box size (a TSV716T2 is a 7x16); the body is longer than the name because of the V. Haulmark's Transport car trailers are in the 8.5 ft rows, because they are 8.5 ft enclosed trailers fitted out for cars.

A full dump box can be an overloaded dump trailer

Payload is a weight, and the box is a volume. Carry-On publishes both for its 10K low profile dumps:

  • 6x10: 3.3 cubic yards, 7,640 lb (3,465 kg) payload, so 2,315 lb per cubic yard if filled level.
  • 6x12: 4 cubic yards, 7,100 lb (3,221 kg) payload, so 1,775 lb per cubic yard if filled level.

Any material heavier than that per cubic yard reaches the GVWR before the box is full. Find what your load weighs per yard from the supplier's ticket, and put the total into the calculator above.

The car you put on it is cargo, and so is everything in the car. Big Tex puts it this way: "Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum rated weight of the loaded trailer, including the trailer itself. Payload, or cargo capacity, is the weight available for the vehicle and other items you carry." Its own example is the 18 ft 10CH: 9,990 lb GVWR, 2,125 lb empty, 7,865 lb left for the car. Use the car's published curb weight as the cargo figure, plus anything inside it, not a guess.

To work out the loaded weight, add the horses. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, NebGuide G2039, Tips for New Horse Owners: "The average stock-type mature horses weigh 1,200 pounds. Lighter breeds such as Arabians and Morgans will weigh about 1,000 pounds." That is guidance for an average horse, not yours. Two 1,200 lb horses in the Exiss 720 BP, 2 horse (2,900 lb empty) make 5,300 lb (2,404 kg), leaving 1,700 lb of its 7,000 lb GVWR for tack, hay, water and a full dressing room.

Ontario's agriculture ministry: "Using a weigh scale is the most accurate way to determine a horse's weight." A weight tape around the girth is the practical estimate. Put your horses' combined weight plus everything else you load into the calculator above.

U-Haul's tow dolly is listed on the same towing page at 740 lb empty, 4,080 lb max cargo and 4,820 lb max gross.

U-Haul's rule for its car trailer: "Curb weight of the vehicle must exceed the weight of the loaded trailer." That is a rental condition, not a law, and its 6x12 cargo trailer page sets the same one. So the vehicle towing the Auto Transport must weigh more, empty, than the car on it plus the trailer's 2,210 lb.

Empty weight, GVWR and payload

  • Empty weight is the trailer with nothing on it. Makers call it empty weight, curb weight, dry weight or just weight. Big Tex notes that added accessories and equipment use some of the cargo capacity, so a trailer with a toolbox, a winch or extra ramps weighs more than its sheet.
  • GVWR is the most the trailer may weigh loaded. 49 CFR 571.3, Definitions defines it as "Gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle." Big Tex's own reminder: "Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) includes both the trailer and its cargo; it is not the amount of equipment you can carry."
  • Payload or cargo capacity is GVWR minus the empty weight: what you can actually put on it. On every model in this sample that publishes both, the two add up to the GVWR exactly. Two Carry-On high-side dumps whose figures did not add up were left out.

The rating that applies to your trailer is the one on its own plate, not a brochure. In the US the certification label goes on the forward half of the left side: 49 CFR 567.4(d), "The label for trailers shall be affixed to a location on the forward half of the left side, such that it is easily readable from outside the vehicle without moving any part of the vehicle." A trailer at 10,000 lb GVWR or less also carries a tire placard with a cargo statement (49 CFR 571.110, S4.3.5). On a Canadian trailer the same GVWR is printed in kilograms and marked PNBV; see how to read your trailer plate.

The ratings that come up most: in this sample 40 of 163 trailers are rated 2,990 or 2,995 lb, 60 are rated 7,000 lb and 16 are rated 9,990 lb. Whether a trailer loaded to its rating needs its own brakes depends on where you tow: check yours on Do I need trailer brakes?

Tongue weight on a utility, cargo or dump trailer

Chevrolet, 2026 Trailering Guide, p. 8 gives 10 to 15% of the loaded trailer weight on the ball for a conventional hitch. That is manufacturer guidance, not law. On a 7,000 lb loaded tandem it is 700 lb to 1,050 lb; on U-Haul's 6x12 cargo trailer at its 4,400 lb maximum, 440 lb to 660 lb.

On an open or dump trailer you set it by where the load sits: more of it ahead of the axles raises the tongue weight. Ford's towing guide suggests about 60% of the cargo in the front half of the trailer and 40% in the rear, within the tongue limits; that is guidance too. All of the tongue weight counts against your tow vehicle's payload. Measure or estimate yours on the tongue weight calculator, and check that your ball and mount are rated for it on trailer ball size and drop.

Weight distribution on a utility, car, dump, enclosed or horse trailer

Whether you need a weight distribution hitch depends on your tow vehicle's hitch, not on the kind of trailer. Ford's towing guide puts it this way: "See Hitch Receiver Weight Capacity chart for the weight-carrying and weight-distributing capacities of these hitch receivers. (These capacities also are shown on a label affixed to each receiver.)" If the loaded trailer or its tongue weight is over the weight-carrying figure on your receiver, you need weight distribution; over the weight-distributing figure, no hitch makes it allowable. Ford's chart, for one, gives the F-150 receiver 5,000 lb weight-carrying, so a car hauler, dump or enclosed tandem loaded to 7,000 lb needs weight distribution behind that truck. Work through it on do I need a weight distribution hitch?

How to find what your loaded trailer weighs

  1. Read the GVWR and, if it is there, the empty weight off the trailer's own plate or label.
  2. Add up the load: the supplier's ticket for gravel or mulch, the published curb weight for a car, a scale or weight tape for horses.
  3. Weigh the rig loaded, as you tow it, on a public truck scale. The trailer axle reading plus the extra weight the truck carries when hitched is the loaded trailer; that extra weight on the truck is the tongue weight.

The scale reading is the only figure that includes everything you actually carry.

What this page does not cover

  • Gooseneck and fifth wheel trailers put far more weight on the truck and hitch differently. They get their own page.
  • Travel trailers and campers are on travel trailer weight by length.
  • Boat trailers are on the boat trailer weight calculator.
  • Tow dollies and flat towing are a separate question from a full trailer.
  • What the load itself weighs (gravel, soil, lumber) depends on the material; use the supplier's figure.

Sources

Maker and rental spec pages, each opened on 2026-10-24 (Big Tex, Carry-On, Exiss, Haulmark, PJ, U-Haul). Every row in the tables comes from one of these.

All counts, ranges, medians, per-yard figures and tongue weights on this page are calculated from the figures above. Makers revise specs during the model year; check the current sheet, and the plate on the trailer itself, before you load it.

Common questions

How much does a utility trailer weigh?
Empty, the 41 open utility trailers in this sample run 630 to 2,380 lb (286 to 1,080 kg). A 5x8 is about 767 lb (median of 4), a 7x16 about 1,860 lb. Loaded, plan on the GVWR on the trailer's plate: in this sample 22 of them are rated 2,990 or 2,995 lb and 8 are rated 7,000 lb.
How much does a 5x8 enclosed trailer weigh?
Across the 5x8 enclosed cargo trailers we opened (10 models), empty weight runs 807 to 975 lb (366 to 442 kg), median 890 lb (404 kg). GVWR is 2,400, 2,700 or 2,990 lb, which leaves 1,510 to 2,183 lb of payload. Read the GVWR before the size: it is what the trailer may weigh once it is loaded.
How much does a 6x10 enclosed trailer weigh?
Across the 6x10 enclosed cargo trailers we opened (4 models), empty weight runs 1,080 to 1,200 lb (490 to 544 kg), median 1,163 lb (527 kg). GVWR is 2,990 lb, which leaves 1,790 to 1,910 lb of payload. Read the GVWR before the size: it is what the trailer may weigh once it is loaded.
How much does a 6x12 enclosed trailer weigh?
Across the 6x12 enclosed cargo trailers we opened (10 models), empty weight runs 1,207 to 2,200 lb (547 to 998 kg), median 1,780 lb (807 kg). GVWR is 2,990, 4,400 or 7,000 lb, which leaves 1,660 to 5,260 lb of payload. Read the GVWR before the size: it is what the trailer may weigh once it is loaded.
How much does a 7x14 enclosed trailer weigh?

Do I need a weight distribution hitch for a car hauler, utility, dump or horse trailer?
It depends on your tow vehicle's hitch, not the trailer type. A receiver carries a weight-carrying rating and a weight-distributing rating on its label; if the loaded trailer or its tongue weight is over the weight-carrying figure, you need weight distribution. Ford, for one, rates the F-150 receiver at 5,000 lb weight-carrying, so a car hauler loaded to 7,000 lb needs weight distribution on that truck.
