2026 Ford Expedition towing capacity
US & CanadaEvery rating Ford publishes for the 2026 Expedition, read from Ford's own documents, in pounds and kilograms.
How much can the 2026 Ford Expedition tow?
Ford rates the 2026 Ford Expedition to tow up to 9,600 lb (4,354 kg) on a ball hitch in one configuration: Expedition (SWB), 3.5L EcoBoost V6, 4x4, Active, Platinum or King Ranch without 24 in wheels, 3.73 axle, at 15,900 lb GCWR, with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow (standard on 4x4); weight-distributing hitch above 7,000 lb. Source: Ford, 2026 Expedition Towing Information, Trailer Towing Selector, hitch receiver and required equipment, PDF p. 1. The highest conventional tongue load Ford publishes is 960 lb (435 kg) (Ford, 2026 Expedition Towing Information, Trailer Towing Selector, hitch receiver and required equipment, PDF p. 1).
A maximum is one truck, not yours. The rating that applies is the one for your exact cab, bed, engine, drive, axle and packages, and it is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Find your row in the table below, then check payload and GCWR as well: a truck often runs out of payload before it reaches its tow rating.

What the Expedition needs to tow its rating
These come from Ford's own documents, cited in the sources below.
- Ford: "Max loaded trailer weight ratings over 7,000 lbs. require weight-distributing hitch for Expedition SWB and LWB models."
- Required equipment for trailers over 7,000 lb: Class IV Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow, which Ford says "is now standard on 4x4 and requires aftermarket weight-distributing hitch." The guide warns the New Vehicle Limited Warranty may be voided if you tow without it.
- Factory Class IV receiver: weight-carrying 7,000 lb trailer with 700 lb tongue; weight-distributing 9,600 lb with 960 lb tongue (Expedition 4x4) or 9,000 lb with 900 lb tongue (Expedition MAX 4x4).
- Ford: "Trailer tongue load weight should be 10% of total loaded trailer weight." Ratings are calculated with SAE J2807.
- Maximum trailer frontal area: 55 sq ft without Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow and 60 sq ft with it (4x4 only).
Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first
Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from Ford.
The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Run your own numbers in Can I tow this?, which checks all three at once and names the one you hit first, or work through them one at a time with the payload calculator and the tongue weight calculator.
2026 Ford Expedition towing capacity in Canada
Matches for 4x4. Ford Canada's 2026 guide lists only 4x4 Expeditions, with the same figures: 9,600 lb at 15,900 lb GCWR, 9,200 lb (24 in wheels) or 9,300 lb (Tremor High Output) at 15,600 lb, and 9,000 lb for Expedition MAX, all on a 3.73 axle, with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow standard. No 4x2 rows are printed for Canada. Source: Ford Canada, 2026 RV & Trailer Towing Guide, Expedition section, p. 1 .
On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.
