How to read a maximum towing capacity

Our guidance, not a rule. How the numbers fit together, not a figure from any maker.

A maker's headline tow rating is the best case: one cab, one bed, one engine, often a tow package and a specific axle, usually counted with only a driver and one passenger aboard. Your truck's rating can be thousands of pounds lower. It is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening, and each vehicle page lists every configuration so you can find yours.

Then check the limits that usually bind first. The trailer's tongue weight comes out of payload, and the truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. Where do these towing capacities come from?
From each maker's own towing guide, trailering chart, spec sheet or owner's manual, opened and read, with the page cited on every row. We do not use review sites or dealer pages for ratings. All 20 vehicles on this page link to the documents behind them.
Is the maximum towing capacity what my truck can tow?
Usually not. The maximum is the best-equipped configuration, often with a tow package, a particular axle and a particular engine. Your truck's rating depends on its exact build and is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Each vehicle page has the full table so you can find your row.
