Ford rates the 2026 Ford F-250 Super Duty to tow up to 22,000 lb (9,979 kg) on a ball hitch in one configuration: 6.7L Power Stroke V8 diesel, conventional, all cabs, boxes and drives printed: 18,200 to 22,000 lb, 3.31 axle, at 30,000 lb GCWR, with High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package (535). Source: Ford, 2026 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guide (v3), F-250 SRW Super Duty Pickup, Conventional Towing, PDF p. 2. The highest fifth wheel or gooseneck rating is 23,000 lb (10,433 kg) (Ford, 2026 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guide (v3), F-250 SRW Super Duty Pickup, Conventional Towing, PDF p. 2). The highest conventional tongue load Ford publishes is 2,200 lb (998 kg) (Ford, 2026 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guide (v3), F-250 SRW Super Duty Pickup, Conventional Towing, PDF p. 2).

A maximum is one truck, not yours. The rating that applies is the one for your exact cab, bed, engine, drive, axle and packages, and it is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Find your row in the table below, then check payload and GCWR as well: a truck often runs out of payload before it reaches its tow rating.

What the F-250 Super Duty needs to tow its rating

These come from Ford's own documents, cited in the sources below.

  • For conventional towing over 18,200 lb the F-250 needs the "High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package (535) required with 18" All-Season or 20" All-Terrain Tires", and Ford says the New Vehicle Limited Warranty may be voided if you tow without it.
  • Receiver: 2.5 in on the F-250, rated 22,000 lb trailer and 2,200 lb tongue for weight-carrying or weight-distributing use; F-250/F-350 Tremor 18,200 lb and 1,820 lb.
  • Ford: "Conventional trailer tongue load weight should be 10% (15% for 5th-wheel and gooseneck towing) of total loaded trailer weight." Tongue or king pin load, passengers and cargo must not take the truck over rear GAWR or GVWR.
  • Ford: "Trailer towing values are the same for weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches." If you use load bars, Ford recommends 50% front axle load restoration.
  • Maximum trailer frontal area is 75 sq ft for 5th-wheel and gooseneck and 60 sq ft for all other applications. Ratings assume a 150 lb driver and passenger and are calculated with SAE J2807.

Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first

Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from Ford.

The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Run your own numbers in Can I tow this?, which checks all three at once and names the one you hit first, or work through them one at a time with the payload calculator and the tongue weight calculator.

2026 Ford F-250 Super Duty towing capacity in Canada

Not verified. These are Ford's US figures; we have not checked a Ford Canada 2026 Super Duty towing guide against them.

On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.

Conventional tongue load should be 10% (15% for 5th-wheel and gooseneck) of loaded trailer weight. Trailer towing values are the same for weight-carrying and weight-distributing hitches. The same figures appear in Ford's 2026 RV & Trailer Towing Guide, p. 20. Quoted: "Maximum towing capabilities are for properly equipped vehicles with required equipment and a 150-lb. driver and passenger and vary based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories, option content and number of passengers." Common questions

How much can a 2026 Ford F-250 tow?
Up to 22,000 lb on a conventional hitch, 22,300 lb on a 5th-wheel and 23,000 lb on a gooseneck, all with a 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package (535). The 23,000 lb gooseneck figure is the 6.7L H.O. on a Regular Cab 4x2 8 ft box at 31,000 lb GCWR. Without package 535 (and outside the Tremor), the 6.7L diesel line is at 23,500 lb GCWR and rates 15,500 lb to 16,600 lb conventional.
How much can an F-250 diesel tow?
With package 535, the 6.7L Power Stroke and 6.7L H.O. rate 18,200 lb to 22,000 lb conventional depending on cab, box and drive. Tremor diesels rate 18,200 lb conventional. Without package 535, Ford caps F-250 conventional towing at 18,200 lb.
How much can an F-250 with the gas engine tow?
The 7.3L V8 reaches 18,200 lb conventional and 19,500 lb 5th-wheel or gooseneck on the 4.30 axle (GCWR 26,000 lb). The standard 6.8L V8 reaches 17,300 lb conventional on the 4.30 axle and 14,800 lb on the 3.73.
What is the F-250 fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing capacity?
Ford prints separate 5th-wheel and gooseneck columns. Tops: 22,300 lb 5th-wheel and 23,000 lb gooseneck (6.7L H.O., package 535). Gas tops: 19,500 lb either way with the 7.3L and 4.30 axle. Ford sizes king pin weight at 15% of the loaded trailer, and the closed tailgate on a 4x4 F-250 sits 57.9 to 60.0 inches high, so check your trailer's clearance.
How much tongue weight can an F-250 handle?
The F-250's factory 2.5 in receiver is rated for 2,200 lb of tongue weight (1,820 lb on a Tremor), whether you use a weight-carrying or weight-distributing hitch. The tongue weight also has to fit inside the truck's payload and rear GAWR.
What is the GCWR of an F-250?
The 2026 guide lists 21,000 lb (6.8L, 3.73), 23,500 lb (6.8L 4.30, 7.3L 3.73, or diesel without package 535), 24,600 lb and 26,000 lb (7.3L), 28,300 lb (diesel Tremor), 30,000 lb (6.7L diesel with package 535) and 31,000 lb (6.7L H.O. with package 535).
What is the payload of a 2026 F-250?
Ford's 2026 towing guide does not print an F-250 payload figure. The 8,000 lb on its engine page is the maximum across all Super Duty pickups, not a figure Ford gives for the F-250. Read the payload on your own truck's door-jamb label, which is the figure that counts.
What is the towing difference between an F-250 and an F-350?
On a conventional hitch, the F-250 tops out at 22,000 lb and the single-rear-wheel F-350 at 25,000 lb (6.7L H.O., 3.55 axle, 35,200 lb GCWR, Crew Cab 4x4 8 ft box). The F-350 SRW receiver is rated 25,000 lb and 2,500 lb tongue against the F-250's 22,000 lb and 2,200 lb.
