2026 GMC Sierra 1500 towing capacity
US & CanadaEvery rating GMC publishes for the 2026 Sierra 1500, read from GMC's own documents, in pounds and kilograms.
How much can the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 tow?
GMC rates the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 to tow up to 13,300 lb (6,033 kg) on a ball hitch in one configuration: Double Cab, Standard Bed, 2WD, Duramax 3.0L, at 19,000 lb GCWR, with Max Trailering Package and 20 in wheels. Source: GMC, 2026 Sierra 1500 Trailering Charts. The highest fifth wheel or gooseneck rating is 9,900 lb (4,491 kg) (GMC, 2026 Sierra 1500 Trailering Charts). Maximum payload is 2,230 lb (1,012 kg) (GMC, 2026 Sierra 1500 model page and FAQ (gmc.com)).
A maximum is one truck, not yours. The rating that applies is the one for your exact cab, bed, engine, drive, axle and packages, and it is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Find your row in the table below, then check payload and GCWR as well: a truck often runs out of payload before it reaches its tow rating.

What the Sierra 1500 needs to tow its rating
These come from GMC's own documents, cited in the sources below.
- The 13,300 lb maximum needs a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD with the Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, the Max Trailering Package and 20 in wheels (GMC trailering chart).
- GMC: Sierra 1500 models towing more than 7,000 lb should move from a weight-carrying hitch to a weight-distributing hitch. GM's towing supplement lists it as required over 7,000 lb (3,175 kg), set to 50% distribution.
- GMC and GM: tongue weight roughly 10% to 15% of the loaded trailer for a ball hitch, 15% to 25% for a fifth wheel or gooseneck, and never more than the maximum tongue weight on the Trailering Information label.
- GM: the trailer, its tongue and everything in the truck must stay under GCWR, GVWR, the maximum trailer weight rating, the maximum tongue weight rating and the rear GAWR. The Trailering Information Label on the driver side B-pillar has those ratings for your truck.
Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first
Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from GMC.
The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Run your own numbers in Can I tow this?, which checks all three at once and names the one you hit first, or work through them one at a time with the payload calculator and the tongue weight calculator.
2026 GMC Sierra 1500 towing capacity in Canada
GMC Canada lists the same 13,300 lb (6,032 kg) maximum for the 2026 Sierra 1500. Its TurboMax figure is 4,309 kg (9,500 lb), where GMC's US chart tops out at 9,400 lb for the TurboMax, and its model page gives no payload figure. We have not checked Canadian configurations row by row. Source: GMC Canada, 2026 Sierra 1500 model page (gmccanada.ca) .
On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.
