2026 Ram 3500 towing capacity

US & Canada

Every rating Ram publishes for the 2026 3500, read from Ram's own documents, in pounds and kilograms.

How much can the 2026 Ram 3500 tow?

23,000 lb Max conventional towing (10,433 kg)
36,610 lb Max fifth wheel or gooseneck (16,606 kg)
7,590 lb Max payload (3,443 kg)
2,300 lb Max conventional tongue load (1,043 kg)

Ram rates the 2026 Ram 3500 to tow up to 23,000 lb (10,433 kg) on a ball hitch in one configuration: Any configuration on a conventional (receiver) hitch: Ram requires a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch above 23,000 lb, with Class V receiver, 2,300 lb max tongue. Source: Ram, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (chart v1.9), footnote 10. The highest fifth wheel or gooseneck rating is 36,610 lb (16,606 kg) (Ram, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (chart v1.9), footnote 10). Maximum payload is 7,590 lb (3,443 kg) (Ram, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (chart v1.9), footnote 10). The highest conventional tongue load Ram publishes is 2,300 lb (1,043 kg) (Ram, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (chart v1.9), footnote 10).

A maximum is one truck, not yours. The rating that applies is the one for your exact cab, bed, engine, drive, axle and packages, and it is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Find your row in the table below, then check payload and GCWR as well: a truck often runs out of payload before it reaches its tow rating.

What the 3500 needs to tow its rating

These come from Ram's own documents, cited in the sources below.

  • Ram: "Trailer Weight and Payload Rating are mutually exclusive." The trailer's tongue or pin weight comes out of the truck's payload.
  • Ram requires a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch on the Ram 3500 for trailers over 23,000 lb. Every 2026 Ram 3500 diesel rating (23,550 lb to 36,610 lb) is above that line, so those figures need an in-bed hitch.
  • The receiver is Class V. Ram: the Ram 3500 "Class V (receiver hitch) is limited to 2,300 lb."
  • Ram's recommended conventional tongue weight is 10 percent of gross trailer weight; for 5th-wheel and gooseneck trailers the pin weight must not exceed payload or GAWR.
  • Ratings follow SAE J2807 with 300 lb of passengers, 100 lb of options and hitch weights of 75 lb (conventional), 40 lb (gooseneck) and 250 lb (5th-wheel).

Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first

Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from Ram.

The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Run your own numbers in Can I tow this?, which checks all three at once and names the one you hit first, or work through them one at a time with the payload calculator and the tongue weight calculator.

2026 Ram 3500 towing capacity in Canada

The headline figures match: Ram Canada's 2026 heavy duty chart also prints 16,606 kg (36,610 lb) for the Ram 3500 DRW diesel Regular Cab 4x4 and 7,590 lb top payload. It prints kg first, calls the values estimates for a properly equipped base trim, lists some lines that differ, and words the hitch rule differently: a fifth-wheel hitch above 23,000 lb and a gooseneck hitch above 30,000 lb. Check the Canadian chart (veh_ramHdCa) for a Canadian truck.

On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.

Ram 3500: highest 36,610 lb (Cummins High-Output, DRW, 3.42 axle, GVWR 14,000 lb, GCWR 45,000 lb, Regular Cab 8 ft bed, 4x4); 6.4L HEMI highest 18,150 lb (DRW, 4.10, GCWR 25,000 lb, Regular Cab 4x2); highest payload 7,590 lb (6.4L HEMI, DRW, GVWR 14,000 lb, Regular Cab 4x2). Rows marked * apply to vehicles produced with sales code Z2K/Z7G/Z3Y. Quoted: "When properly equipped. All weights given in pounds and rounded to the nearest 10 lb. Trailer Weight and Payload Rating are mutually exclusive. GAWRs, GVWRs and GCWRs should never be exceeded." Checked 2026-10-24.
  • Ram, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (chart v1.9), footnote 10: Receiver tongue limits are 2,000 lb on the 2500 and 2,300 lb on the 3500. The same footnote requires a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch for trailers over 20,000 lb on the 2500 and over 23,000 lb on the 3500, so 23,000 lb is the most a 3500 may pull on its receiver and every 3500 rating above it is a 5th-wheel or gooseneck figure. Recommended conventional tongue weight is 10 percent of gross trailer weight; for 5th-wheel and gooseneck trailers the pin weight must not exceed payload or GAWR. Quoted: "The maximum tongue weight for Ram 2500 (4x2/4x4) Class V (receiver hitch) is limited to 2,000 lb., for Ram 3500 (4x2/4x4) Class V (receiver hitch) is limited to 2,300 lb." Checked 2026-10-24.
  • Ram Canada, 2026 Ram Heavy Duty Payload & Towing Weight Capacities (April 22 version), footnote 10: Ram Canada's 2026 heavy duty chart prints kg (lb) and calls its payload and trailer weights estimated values for a properly equipped base trim. Its top figures match the US chart (Ram 2500 20,000 lb; Ram 3500 16,606 kg / 36,610 lb; payload 4,580 lb and 7,590 lb), but some lines differ, and its hitch rule is worded differently: 5th-wheel above 23,000 lb and gooseneck above 30,000 lb, with no separate 2500 threshold or receiver limit printed. Quoted: "A fifth-wheel hitch is required for trailers over 10,432 kg (23,000 lb). A Gooseneck hitch is required for trailers over 13,608 kg (30,000 lb)." Checked 2026-10-24.

Common questions

How much can a 2026 Ram 3500 tow?
Up to 36,610 lb on Ram's chart: the 6.7L Cummins High-Output diesel, dual rear wheels, 3.42 axle, Regular Cab 8 ft bed, 4x4, GCWR 45,000 lb. That is a 5th-wheel or gooseneck figure. On the receiver hitch the 3500 is held to 23,000 lb, because Ram requires a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch above that.
How much can a Ram 3500 dually tow?
With the Cummins High-Output, the DRW 3500 rates 32,890 lb (Mega Cab 4x4) to 36,610 lb (Regular Cab 4x4), all on the 3.42 axle and all needing a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch. With the 6.4L HEMI, the DRW rates 14,800 lb to 18,150 lb.
How much can a single-rear-wheel Ram 3500 diesel tow?
The SRW Cummins High-Output rates 23,550 lb to 26,080 lb, the top figure on a Regular Cab 8 ft bed 4x4 at GCWR 34,000 lb. All of these are above 23,000 lb, so they need a 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch.
How much tongue weight can a Ram 3500 handle?
2,300 lb on the Class V receiver, Ram's stated limit. With a 5th-wheel or gooseneck, Ram's rule is that the pin weight must not exceed payload or GAWR, so check the pin weight against the payload on your own door-jamb label.
What is the payload of a 2026 Ram 3500?
Up to 7,590 lb, on a 6.4L HEMI DRW Regular Cab 4x2 with a 14,000 lb GVWR. The heaviest-payload diesel is the DRW Regular Cab 4x4 at 6,050 lb. Payload and trailer weight are mutually exclusive, so a heavy pin weight eats into it.
What are the GVWR and GCWR of a Ram 3500?
SRW trucks on the 2026 chart run 11,040 lb to 12,300 lb GVWR and DRW trucks 14,000 lb. GCWR runs from 22,000 lb (HEMI) to 45,000 lb (Cummins DRW Regular Cab). Your truck's own GVWR is on its door-jamb label.
