2026 Tesla Model Y towing capacity
US & CanadaEvery rating Tesla publishes for the 2026 Model Y, read from Tesla's own documents, in pounds and kilograms.
How much can the 2026 Tesla Model Y tow?
Tesla rates the 2026 Tesla Model Y to tow up to 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) on a ball hitch in one configuration: Model Y / Model Y Premium (5-Seater) / Model Y Performance, 18 in wheels, 5 or fewer passengers, with Max tongue 350 lb (159 kg). Source: Tesla, Model Y Owner's Manual (2025+, North America, software version 2026.20), Towing and Accessories, pp. 99 to 100. The highest conventional tongue load Tesla publishes is 350 lb (159 kg) (Tesla, Model Y Owner's Manual (2025+, North America, software version 2026.20), Towing and Accessories, pp. 99 to 100).
A maximum is one truck, not yours. The rating that applies is the one for your exact cab, bed, engine, drive, axle and packages, and it is printed on the labels in the driver's door opening. Find your row in the table below, then check payload and GCWR as well: a truck often runs out of payload before it reaches its tow rating.

What the Model Y needs to tow its rating
These come from Tesla's own documents, cited in the sources below.
- Tesla: "The tongue weight is the downward force that the weight of the trailer exerts on the hitch. This must not exceed 10% of the maximum trailer weight." Load the trailer so tongue weight is about 4 to 10% of total trailer weight.
- Tesla: "For trailers with a combined loading of more than 1650 lbs (750 kg), Tesla recommends using a separate braking system with an independent controller." The brake controller is bought separately and connects through a 4-pin pigtail from Tesla Service.
- Trailer Mode must always be active when towing.
- The hitch receiver takes a ball mount up to 8.5 in (22 cm) long with a rise of up to 0.75 in (2 cm); the towing package does not include a ball mount.
- With an accessory carrier (bike rack) the hitch is designed for vertical loads up to 160 lb (72 kg), less than the 350 lb trailer tongue limit.
- Inflate tires to 42 psi (290 kPa) cold when towing, and tow only on the tire sizes Tesla lists.
Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first
Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from Tesla.
The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Run your own numbers in Can I tow this?, which checks all three at once and names the one you hit first, or work through them one at a time with the payload calculator and the tongue weight calculator.
2026 Tesla Model Y towing capacity in Canada
Same limits: the en_ca manual page prints the same tables. Tesla adds: "In Canada, towing is limited to 55 mph (89 km/h)."
On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.
