About the figures.

toyota.com prints Plug-in Hybrid payloads of 1,250 to 1,340 lb, but its own GVWR (5,530 lb) minus its curb weights (4,430 to 4,540 lb) gives about 990 to 1,100 lb. The payload is left blank until Toyota's figures agree; use the Tire and Loading Information label on your door.

toyota.com prints no payload for the Hybrid; its GVWR is 4,785 lb (FWD) or 4,920 lb (AWD).

What the RAV4 needs to tow its rating

These come from Toyota's own documents, cited in the sources below.

  • Toyota: "Never tow beyond a vehicle's published towing capacities." The 3,500 lb rating needs AWD on a grade other than LE or GR SPORT; every FWD RAV4 and the LE AWD are rated 1,750 lb.
  • Toyota: "All FWD models and the LE AWD model will have a 1,750-pound towing capacity."
  • A factory tow hitch is listed only on the Woodland ("2-in. Rear Tow Hitch Receiver with Wiring Harness"); toyota.com lists the tow hitch as not available from the factory on the other grades.
  • Toyota: "Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off."
  • Trailer-Sway Control is standard on every 2026 RAV4 grade, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, per toyota.com.
  • Toyota prints no tongue weight, GCWR or trailer brake threshold for the 2026 RAV4 in the documents read; check the Owner's Manual and the door label. Our guidance, not a rule: plan on a braked trailer near the 3,500 lb limit.

Payload, tongue weight and GCWR: the limits you hit first

Our guidance, not a rule. This is how the ratings above fit together, not a figure from Toyota.

The tow rating is only one of five limits. The trailer's tongue weight sits on the truck, so it comes out of payload along with every passenger and everything in the bed, and it loads the rear axle. The truck and trailer together must stay under GCWR. A truck with a big crew and a full bed can reach its payload or GCWR with a trailer well under its tow rating. Toyota Canada's 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Product Summary lists AWD models only (LE, XLE, Woodland, XSE, Limited): LE 794 kg (1,750 lb), all others 1,588 kg (3,500 lb), GVWR 2,231.68 kg (4,920 lb), payload (GVWR minus curb weight) 454 to 533 kg (1,001 to 1,175 lb). The Plug-in Hybrid summary lists SE and XSE at 1,588 kg (3,500 lb) and GR SPORT with no towing capacity, GVWR 2,587.75 kg (5,705 lb) against 5,530 lb on toyota.com. On a Canadian truck the certification label gives GVWR in kilograms, labelled both GVWR and PNBV (Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038), s. 6(1)(e)(i)). The figures to trust are the ones on your own door opening.
